Written By Emma Carrick Have you ever thought about living on Mars? Well, your space vacation may be delayed. Here’s why:The challenge:The reason why getting oxygen on Mars is a challenge is because Mars does not have the 19% of minimum oxygen needed to support human life. (Mars has less than .2% and Earth has 21%) So basically, without the 19% of oxygen humans need, we would all die.Ways To Solve These Problems:1) Aboard the ISS, they make oxygen by using the electrolysis of water. Oxygen is separated from hydrogen. The oxygen is filtered into the air current and the hydrogen is filtered out. This can be done with an electric current being passed through the water at about 1.23 volts to split the elements apart.2) Moxie is an instrument to be launched on Mars in 2020. It generates electric power to create oxygen. (10 grams per hour.) It is created by the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere on mars, and it heats the carbon dioxide to isolate the oxygen atoms. Then the carbon monoxide and the oxygen created are filtered into the airstream and Mars’s atmosphere. I believe both solutions would work because there is water under the surface of mars, but in its entirety, it would be a problem to constantly get to it. Due to this, I believe Moxie would work best. Costs: Anywhere between $3 and $4.5 billion Difficulty building: A lot Possible malfunctions? Filters break, spaceships malfunction, not enough money, storms, ect.Sources:~http://www.businessinsider.com/moxie-makes-oxygen-for-colonies-on-mars-2015-3Website: Business InsiderArticle: Scientists have a plan to make breathable oxygen on Mars for the first time.Date Published: March 3rd, 2015Author: Jessica Orwig~https://mars.nasa.gov/mars2020/mission/instruments/moxie/Website: NASAArticle: MOXIE – Mars 2020 RoverDate Published: UnknownAuthor: Unknown~https://www.nasa.gov/press-release/nasa-confirms-evidence-that-liquid-water-flows-on-today-s-marsWebsite: NASAArticle: NASA Confirms Evidence That Liquid Water Flows On Today’s MarsDate Published: September 28, 2015Author: Dwayne Brown, Laurie Cantillo, Guy Webster, Gina Anderson
