Air Pollution; What is it?

Air pollution is an air contamination of many gases and smoke. A substance that can impact living things and environments on Earth negatively is considered an air pollutant. Carbon Dioxide is an abundant form of air pollution that can be noted as a pollutant when it combines with cars, factories, machinery, and many other regular activities that implement the burning of fossil fuels. During the past 150 years, the amount of carbon dioxide that emitted into the air was higher than before by very much. Methane is another example of a greenhouse gas. Greenhouse gases can be causes of global warming, the emitting of these gases can create a layer so that as sunlight enters the atmosphere, it cannot escape due to this barrier of greenhouse gases. This causes the Earth to warm up. Sulfur Dioxide is one more example of a greenhouse gas, and is a primary cause of acid rain. As sulfur dioxide mixes in with water vapor, the hydrogen acidifies, causing the rain to be somewhat acidic. Volcanoes used to be the primary source of sulfur dioxide, but now, humans are.

What is the Air Quality Index (AQI) ?

AQI is a regular daily report that describes the air quality. The greater that the level of air pollution, the more hazardous it is to inhale. It is important for people to know how safe their local air is. The conditions of air quality are described through range, conditions, and coded through color.

In recent years, results from scientific studies have increased. Public awarenesses of the possible damage to human health from outdoor and indoor pollution have been raised.

Factors affecting AQI

There are many factors that can affect air pollution and the Air Quality Index. 

Wind: Wind causes pollutants to spread causing disputing of pollution. High wind can create dust which can lower the air quality. 

Weather: In cold weather, humans light fires and travel to work more often in mechanical cars, which run on the burning of fossil fuels. In warm weather humans use barbecues and go on trips.

Rain: Washes out water with pollutants and matter.

High air temperatures: Speed up chemical reactions out in the open.

Cars: Release carbon monoxide and other greenhouse gases.

Factories: Produce many hazardous air pollutants. This is risky for human health.

Burning fossil fuels: Sulfur dioxide can result from the burning of fossil fuels. Sulfur dioxide is slowly killing our environment with dangerous gases.

Agrarian activities: Ammonia is a familiar result of agricultural activities. Ammonia is one of the most dangerous gases within the atmosphere.

Factories and Industries: Manufacturing companies produce large amounts of carbon monoxide, organic compounds, hydrocarbons, and chemicals into the air. This dilutes the quality of the air. Factories are very abundant on Earth, therefore being hazardous all around the globe.

Mining: Mining is a process where minerals and rocks under the surface of Earth is mined and extracted for profit. While mining, dust and chemicals are released into the air causing colossal air pollution.


Chemicals: Chemicals release harmful scents that can irritate the eyes and throat. Bad smells can increase headaches, nausea, and irritations.

Radon: Radon is a gas that occurs in soil and rock in some areas and can get inside of many buildings buy traveling through the soil. Indoors, it can cause cancer.

Microbes: Fungi and viruses can have a role in causing asthma and many allergies when interfering with the airways.

Organisms: Indoor pests and other animals can from diseases in human airways.

Humidity: Extremely low humidity causes irritations in the eyes, dry skin, and rashes. 

Temperature: Indoor air that is too hot or too cold can be hazardous. Air that is too hot can can create poor humidity.

What is Sick Building Syndrome?

Sick Building Syndrome is when a building is in an unhealthy state. This means that the inhabitants of the building are most likely to have headaches, nausea, and respiratory issues. Insufficient ventilation and other factors cause this. 

The causes can be:

Contaminations- pollen, bacteria, viruses, fungus, and molds
Bad ventilation
Radiation- Microwaves, televisions, and computers release radiation based on electromagnetism
Bad lighting

Effects are:

Eye and throat irritation
Hoarse voices
Miscarriages and pregnancy issues
Respiratory problems

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, at least 70% of the 4,000,000 commercial buildings in the United States of America can be considered “sick.”

A sick building would give the occupants of a building negative symptoms. This sickness is a great hazard to many people in the US and many other parts of the world.

Remedy for Sick Building Syndrome

There is not a manifested treatment for this sickness. Doctors can prescribe medications for anxiety and other issues for people who were affected by “Sick Building Syndrome.” 

It is very challenging to prevent this syndrome since this syndrome is not completely clear and understandable to many doctors.

To start off with cleansing the sickness, it is very important to make sure that there aren’t any mold and bacteria. Air filters may need to be cleaned or replaced consistently. If chemicals are kept somewhere, they must be kept in properly ventilated areas. Smoking should be restricted.
