Introduction

 

 

River sand is widely used as fine aggregate to
prepare concrete. River sand is formed by weathering of rocks. It is a natural
process, long time take to form river sand from rocks. Nowadays amount of river
sand will reduce. Therefore environmental authorities are taking actions to
reduce consumption of river sand from river beds. When we consume the sand
continuously, it makes serious threat to environment such as erosion of river
bed, loss of vegetation on river bank, lowering the water table, landslides
etc. If the consumption of river sand is restricted, other types of fine
aggregates should be introduced instead of river sand. Manufactured sand is one
type of newly introduced fine aggregates. Manufactured sand is produced from
crushed hard stones. In order to get the required particle size distribution
the coarser stone aggregates are crushed in primary and secondary crusher (jaw
crusher and cone crusher). Crushed particles are washed to remove clay
particles mixed with fine particles.

 

 

Problem statement

 

 

Manufactured sand is washed before it is used to
remove clay and silt particles from it. Therefore lots of fine particles from
manufactured sand are removed. That’s why there only relatively high dimension
particles. When we mix the concrete by using this manufactured sand we can’t
get a proper packing because there is no small particles to fill the small
gaps. These capillary voids are hazardous to structure. These voids help to
penetrate into the structure and there will be corrosion of reinforcement.
These activities affect the durability of structure.

 

 

Significance of research

 

 

When design a building the long period is consider
as design life of building (e.g.; 100 years). But this design life may be
reduced due to above stated problem. Nowadays using the manufactured sand
instead of river sand in construction field is becoming as general thing, so we
have to give proper solution to this problem.

Scope of the study

 

 

Find out any partial replacement material for the
fine aggregate. This material has some properties to fill the capillary voids
in concrete and will not affect other properties concrete, but can improve
characteristics of concrete.

 

 

Aims and objectives of the research

Materials and Methodology

 

Materials

 

·        
Cement

 

Ordinary Portland cement (grade 43) will be used to prepare concrete.
This type of cement is commonly in civil engineering construction field in
srilanka.

 

·        
Coarse aggregate

 

Broken granite stones will be used as coarse aggregates to prepare concrete.
The normal size of aggregates is 20mm

 

·        
Fine aggregate

 

Manufactured sand will be used as fine aggregates to prepare concrete.
This manufactured sand will be washed before use in concrete.

 

·        
Admixtures

 

Superplastisizer
will be as admixture to improve the workability of concrete.

 

·        
Fly ash

 

Fly ash will be used as a partially replacement
material for fine aggregate. It will be mixed in proportion of 0%, 10%, 20%,
30%, and 40% instead of manufactured sand. Fly ash is produced from thermal
power plant in Norochcholai, Srilanka. It is emitted as gases of burning coal
during the production of electricity.

 

 

Methodology

 

In my research I will study the durability of
concrete with manufactured sand through the permeability of concrete. There
some test method to do the permeability test. They are water permeability test,
water absorption test and rapid chloride ion penetration test. These test
method will be used to carry out the experimental work.

 

Concrete will be mixed with different proportion of
fly ash and cast 150×150×150 mm cube sample and 100 mm diameter cylinder sample
and cure it for 28 days. Cube samples will be used to check the compressive
strength, penetration and water absorption. Cylinder sample will have to cut as
50 mm thick to use in chloride ion penetration test. Slump of concrete should
be checked before cast the cube for each proportion of fly ash. 0% fly ash mix
sample will be considered as control sample. Each test should be carried out

standards water absorption test – BS 1881-122, water permeability test –
DIN 1048 part 5 and rapid chloride ion penetration test – ASTM C1202
