Coffee and tea were so sought after that there has been wars fought just to have access to them. These two beverages mean different things to many different people. It can be the morning tradition of a cup of coffee with the girls at the local café, or a warm cup of tea can be the cure to a cold orbeginning to a relaxing evening. Coffee and tea have their similarities such as and that they are made from parts of trees, have health benefits, and medical uses but still can be very different as to how they are both made to drink, the caffeinecontent, their binomial names, and where they are mainly produced. Due to the popularity of these drinks it is important to acknowledge the similarities and differences they hold. Both coffee and tea are part of the evergreen family and come from parts of a tree that are “trimmed to the height if a shrub, so they can be manageably harvested” (www.diffen.com). Although they are within the same green family, they are come in different forms; tea being leaves that is boiled in water and coffee being beans that are then grated and brewed into a beverage to drink. Coffee has several binomial names, but a few are Coffea Arabica, Coffea Benghalensis and Coffea Canephora. The largest producers of coffee are Brazil, Indonesia, and India. Coffee grows best in tropical regions that are above 3,600 feet and below 8,000 feet in elevation (eHow.com). Tea does not have as many binomial names as coffee; Camellia Sinensis and Camilla Assamica. The largest producers of tea are in India, China, and Kenya. A great similarity with tea and coffee is that there a largevariety of different types to choose from. There are so many different types of coffee is becomes a language itself. There are so many to name, but the most popular are caffé Americano, café latte, cappuccino, expresso, flat white, and macchiato. Each of these different types of coffee are typically made with a light, medium or dark coffee roast, and some of type of milk, and flavoring can be added. Depending on the roast used will determine the boldness of how the coffee will taste. Coffee can also be consumed hot or cold, whatever ones heart desires. There is also a large variety of different teas, some states even having different than others. The most common teas are greentea, black tea, white tea, and herbal tea. Due to the great taste and flavor of each of these teas; most are drank alone and if any additions are needed mainly honey is added. Most people do drink more than one type of tea, depending on the time of day or how they are feeling. Both need to be consumed in moderation because they contain caffeine but, drinking coffee and tea can have health benefits (eHow.com). Both coffee and tea have a variety of different types, but the contents that can be added are very different. Typically milk, sugar, or liquid flavors are added to coffee meanwhile, sugar, honey, spices, ginger, and lemon amongst other condiments are added to tea.Depending on the method of brewing, coffee’s caffeine content can range from 65 mg to 125 milligrams per cup. With coffee having such a high caffeine content there is a common side effect such as “coffee jitters” for people who do not consume it in moderation. Other avoid that the coffee jitters side effect by drinking decaffeinated coffee. Teas also contains caffeine which has approximately 55 milligrams per cup. Each type of tea contains a different amount of caffeine. Green tea has the most caffeine in it: about 48 mg per 150 ml (5 oz.) (livestrong.com). Brewing tea longer can also increase the amount of caffeine in a single serving. Although tea also contains caffeine, because of its lower contact, the effect of caffeine in tea takes longer to enter the blood stream then coffee. Both beverages are known to have health benefits and beneficial medical uses; tea having greater benefits than coffee. Green tea can help interfere with the growth of lung, breast, and bladder, stomach, pancreatic and colorectal cancers. Also it has been shown to reduce the risk of neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Green tea also can help prevent clogging of arteries, and strokes. Black tea helps with the risk of stroke, and damage from cigarette smoke can be lowered by drinking tea (webmd.com). Chamomile is the tea that many people drink when they are feeling under the weather or they need something to help make them sleepy. Some of the ingredients in it have a strong calming effect. Many nutritionists agree that any tea is good tea, but you should drink more brewed teas then bottled to stay away from the artificial flavors and sugar added. There has been much conflict that coffee is bad for your health, but there are actually health benefits such as protecting against Type 2 Diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, liver disease, liver cancer, and promote heart health. One of the most common reasons why people drink coffee is because it helps them feel less tired and increases energy levels. It is known that tea has health benefits, but many people most likely do not know or realize the health benefits of coffee. People usually are not concerned with where these two beverages came from and may not even know the variety of different types of flavors, they are more focused on just having their more cup of ‘joe’, or tea. Coffee is a very strong caffeinated drink that can enjoyed be hot or cold, meanwhile tea is usually only consumed hot. Both coffee and tea come in a variety of types and flavors to be enjoyed. Coffee can help asthma and improve heart health. Tea helps with cancers; strokes, , Parkinson’s disease and can generally just make you feel better when you feel sick. Many doctors would recommend tea over coffee for their overall health. If people knew the similarities and differences between coffee and tea, which would they gravitate towards, or would they just stick to what they have been consuming for so long?
